Summer 2022 Newsletter:

I hope you and your family are well and enjoying the start to your summer, and I hope you’re staying cool amidst this heat wave!
With our legislative session adjourned in April, I have been busy working in the district and getting out into the community. This past May, I enjoyed a visit to the Elgin Math and Science Academy for their Exploratory Friday to learn about expeditionary-style learning. It was wonderful to meet with students and teachers and participate in activities.
At the start of June, Representative Hirschauer and I spent time with some lovely folks playing BINGO at Senior Services of Elgin. We spent the time chatting and providing people information regarding what state services available to them. I want to thank Senior Services and AgeGuide for the invitation and for putting on such a great event!
I hope you find this update useful. If you ever have any questions, concerns or requests for assistance please do not hesitate to contact my office at staterepmoeller@gmail.com or 847-841-7130. It is an honor to represent you in Springfield and my staff and I look forward to serving you.

Warmest Regards,

Anna

Nursing Home Reform

On May 31, 2022, Governor Pritzker signed landmark legislation that I sponsored along with Senator Ann Gillespie that reforms how the state funds nursing homes to require safer, higher quality care, allowing the most vulnerable in our state to live in safe, clean and secure conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored long-term challenges in our long-term care facilities. The Illinois Department of Public Health estimates that nearly 8,000 residents and 100 staff members died, accounting for nearly one-quarter of all COVID-19-related deaths to date. These challenges were most acute in nursing homes with higher populations of Black and Latino residents.
The new package will provide more than $700 million in increased funding. More than $500 million of this money comes from federal matching dollars. It also seeks to shift funding to ensure workers receive higher pay, and facilities receive more funding as they hire more staff and improve safety ratings. It also ties for the first-time nursing home funding to health equity and increased staffing levels and requires increased ownership disclosure.
I was very proud to work alongside Sen. Ann Gillespie, House and Senate staff, AARP, SEIU, Leading Age and IHCA and my colleagues in passing this important measure. It’s one step in a long process to ensure that the most vulnerable in our state receive the best quality care and the safest conditions in our nursing homes. We as a state and as a community that cares have a moral imperative to do just that.

Reading by the River

At the end of April, we partnered with Cook’s Ice Cream, the Gail Borden Public Library and the Elgin Police Department to help raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention. Our Reading by the River event was a big success! We had over 75 kids and family members join us to listen to stories, donate books and get a delicious scoop of ice cream.

We want to extend a special thank you to our guest reader, Officer Edwin Alva. He was as much a hit with the kids as Cook’s Ice Cream!

All of the donations were delivered to our community partners, including the Community Crises Center, the Boys & Girl’s Club, The YMCA, the YWCA, 1212 Larkin, and Paul’s Café.

River Clean Up

At the beginning of May, we joined with Friends of the Fox River for our annual joint River Cleanup event. The rain held off just long enough for us to get to work cleaning up our beloved Fox River. We want to extend a special thank-you to all our volunteers who came out and picked up lots of trash.

Funding Ecological and River Restoration on the Fox

On June 1, 2022 I joined Senator Durbin on Walton Island in Elgin during his announcement of $250,000 in federal funding to support the  Fox River Waterway Study, which will provide a blueprint for further efforts to improve the water quality of the Fox River.
